A crescent shaped row of Georgian townhouses in Bath, England

Bath

With its Roman baths, Gothic cathedral and long rows of Georgian townhouses, the city of Bath in Somerset is a dream destination for history buffs.

Whichever period of history is your favourite, there’s plenty to keep you busy. And on top of that, the city has a strong association with Jane Austen as she lived in Bath between 1801 and 1806. You’ll also find gorgeous architecture, cute little shops, fascinating museums and amazing places to eat and drink, not to mention a luxury spa in the heart of the city!

Bath Spa railway station is right in the heart of the city, making it very easy to visit by train.

Dundee

Most people think of Edinburgh or Glasgow when they’re planning a city break in Scotland. But Dundee has been through a major regeneration and has a growing reputation as a cool city to visit.

As well as established historical attractions like the RRS Discovery (right opposite the train station!), HMS Unicorn and the McManus, the city also has the first V&A museum outside London. This is a fabulous modern structure which looks stunning and hosts many exciting exhibitions.

Add to that the revitalised waterfront area and lots of luxury hotels, and you can see why Dundee is such a cool destination!

A view over Lake Windermere from Loughrigg Fell in the Lake District, UK.

The Lake District

From a city in Scotland to the rural idyll of the Lake District, one of the most beautiful areas in England.

This is the perfect destination for a walking holiday, with plenty of beautiful countryside and picturesque villages to explore. Once you’ve arrived in the Lake District, it’s easy to travel around villages such as Windermere, Coniston and Grasmere. And don’t forget to sample the Grasmere Gingerbread which is made to a recipe dating back to the 1850s and reputed to be the best in the world!

Portmeirion

If visiting a Welsh village makes you think of slate-roofed cottages and fields full of sheep, then this location has a surprise in store for you. Portmeirion Village is certainly one of the quirkiest UK places you can visit by train!

The village was built by architect Clough Williams-Ellis and it’s packed full of brightly coloured Italianate style buildings, unusual statues and hidden surprises. You can sample gelato at the ice cafe or eat in the American diner, plus there are two luxury hotels and plenty of cosy self-catering cottages.

And with a railway station just a few minutes away from the entrance to the village, it’s easy to reach by train.

Blue sky and reflections captured in the River Seven by the English Brigde

Shrewsbury

And my final recommendation for fascinating places to visit by train is my local town of Shrewsbury.

This pretty town sits within a loop of the River Severn and Shrewsbury railway station is right in the heart of the town. The centre of Shrewsbury is full of Tudor half-timbered buildings, narrow little alleyways (called shuts) and a wide range of independent shops that make it an ideal shopping destination. You’ll also find some excellent places to eat and drink and beautiful riverside walks.

I may be a little biased, but I think Shrewsbury is a beautiful place to visit and ideal for a short break by train. It’s also a great base for exploring the county of Shropshire!

Those are my suggestions for fascinating UK destinations to visit by train – which one is your favourite?
