This summer is quite unlike any other summer that we’ve had in the past. You’ve probably had to put some plans on hold for the moment, but some things stay the same.

Some of the usual summer essentials aren’t quite so useful this year – you probably don’t need the pool inflatables, for instance.

But whether you’re heading out for the day, off on a UK staycation or just relaxing in your garden with a good book, you’ll still need protection from UV rays.

So it’s important to make sure that you use plenty of sunscreen, and that you pick the right one for your skin tone. The lighter your skin, the higher the SPF factor that you will need. And don’t forget that you’ll need to cover tattoos with a high SPF sunscreen or sunblock, if you want to keep the colours looking bright.

The sun can really dehydrate your skin, so after sun is important as well. I use generous amounts of Palmers cocoa butter to keep my skin soft, and if you spend a little too long out in the sun, an aloe gel can feel very cooling.

You’ll probably find that high street stores have some really good special offers on sunscreen around now, so shopping around will help you find the best prices.
