Today I’m thrilled to be hosting the blog tour for Zoe Lea’s debut novel, If He Wakes*. It’s a gripping story about trust and distrust, and how relationships may not be how they appear.
Rachel stumbles across a DM on her husband’s Twitter account, and is convinced that he is having an affair. When she goes to confront him, she sees him involved in a hit and run, but not as the victim. Could her husband really be capable of something like that?
Rachel’s best friend Suzie has problems of her own. Her fiance Adam has gone away on work but isn’t answering her calls. And she needs to talk to him because not only is their bank account badly overdrawn, but Suzie is getting threatening calls about a loan repayment. Could her fiance really have left her in this mess?
And then they both find out that their partners have been holding back all kinds of secrets. Much worse than the secrets that they think they know about. Will any of these relationships be able to survive?
Rachel and Suzie are good friends but very different characters. Rachel is an over-acheiver who struggles to give up control, Suzie has big dreams but fails to bring them to fruition. Their lives have taken them down different paths but their friendship appears to be solid. Zoe Lea does a fantastic job of showing their different personalities, and while I liked Rachel, I found Suzie quite frustrating at times.
And this book has twists and turns throughout. I was sure that I’d worked out who Rachel’s husband was having an affair with, and then Zoe Lea casually drops in a piece of information which wrecked my theory. Then I thought I knew what he was actually plotting, and that proved to be wrong as well.
When the truth behind Rachel’s situation is finally unveiled, it came as a huge surprise. I was not expecting this at all!
I found Suzie’s predicament more frustrating than Rachel’s at first. But as the layers of deception are peeled away, it becomes obvious that her relationship is in even more trouble than Rachel’s.
I really enjoyed reading If He Wakes. I usually read about 10% of a Kindle book at first, just to get the flavour of the novel. So if I tell you that I read 1/3 of the book in my first sitting, you can see that it’s a real page turner!
If He Wakes is Zoe Lea’s debut novel, and on this form, she has a bright future ahead of her as a writer.
You can always trust your best friend… can’t you?
When Rachel discovers a Twitter message arranging a romantic liaison she assumes her husband is having an affair, and follows him. What she witnesses is so much worse: a hit and run using his car.
Meanwhile, Rachel’s friend and business partner Suzie is increasingly worried about her fiance, who’s not been in touch for days. When Suzie learns of huge debts racked up in her name she fears he has run out on her, but then the threatening calls start and she thinks something terrible has happened.
Rachel and Suzie are both about to learn shocking things about the men they love, worse than they could ever imagine… Can their friendship survive?
A gripping page-turner of a debut novel – 8/10
