It might be August, but the British summer still seems to be missing in action as I write this. So I’ve been looking at the Clickstay website and dreaming of a sunshine holiday in Italy.

Whenever I think about dream destinations, Italy always figures pretty highly. There’s just so much to see – all of the history, the culture, the beautiful architecture and the gorgeous weather. And of course the fantastic Italian food!
I have actually visited the country just once, back in 1991 when my brother and I toured around Europe. Back then, we were driving in his old Austin Maxi and sleeping overnight in Youth Hostels. And while that was great fun, I think I’d want a bit more luxury the next time I visit.
Luckily, Clickstay can offer a fantastic range of accommodation throughout Italy, from the cities of the North to the beaches and islands of the South. You can choose from apartments and villas with every convenience you might require, even a private pool. I’ve been browsing through their website, and I’ve picked out some of my favourites.
Venice is high on my Italian holiday wishlist, because I think it is just so fascinating. Not just because of the system of canals that it’s built on, but all of the history that surrounds the city as well. With iconic landmrks like the Canal Grande, St Mark’s Square and the Rialto bridge, I’d definitely want to stay right in the heart of the city. This Venice apartment would be perfect, as it is located within easy reach of them all either on foot or by vaporetto.
But sometimes it’s nice to be away from the heart of the action. Booking accommodation a little further out from the city means that you can retreat to your villa when you fancy a little peace and quiet. This 13th Century Villa in Dicomano is surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of the Mugello valley, and combines comfortable furnishings with some beautiful period pieces. It’s just under 40km from Florence, so you could easily drive in to the city when you fancy some sightseeing, and there are water sports available at Lake Bilancino about 16km away. And that pool… just look at the views!
I’m not sure why I’ve never visited Rome, because I’ve always been fascinated by the Romans. I love the way that modern Rome has grown around ancient monuments like the Colosseum. I’ve always thought of it as a very romantic city ever since I first saw Roman Holiday with the gorgeous Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. And who wouldn’t want to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain!
If you’re like me, and dream of going to Rome, then this Apartment in Rome is definitely worth checking out. It’s set in an elegant 19th Century building, right in the heart of the city. The famous Piazza di San Pietro (St Peter’s Square) is just 800m away.
But if we’re talking real dream holidays, then this beautiful Villa in Sorrento might just clinch it for me. Villa Luli has a stunning view of the sea, Sorrento and Mount Vesuvius from its private terrace with swimming pool. It sleeps five people, and has air conditioning and wifi, so it’d be perfect for me to take the boys!
Sorrento is a coastal town facing the Bay of Naples in the south of Italy, and Villa Luli is about 2km from the town centre. Just 10 minutes drive will get you into the town, with its restaurants, shops, bars and beach. You could easily spend your whole holiday relaxing in the gorgeous villa, but it’s also a great base for sightseeing. From Sorrento, it’s easy to visit the city Naples (the birthplace of pizza!) or beautiful Amalfi and Positano. You could visit the historical site of Pompeii, which is definitely somewhere I simply must visit one day. Or take a trip over to the island of Capri. You could even get a train up to Rome if you fancied travelling further afield – the journey takes around three hours.
