Does your skin look the same every day? Bio-Extracts’ bespoke system allows you to tailor your skincare to meet its exact needs.
I’m always on the look out for new ways to pamper my skin. So when Bio-Extracts asked if I’d like to try their innovative bespoke skincare, I couldn’t wait to give it a go.
I was really intrigued to see how the system would work, and what results it would have for my skin.
Bio Extracts are a UK-based skincare brand with an innovative system. It allows you to combine creams and serums from the range to meet your skin’s specific needs. I’ve been using their products for the last few weeks, and I’ve been very impressed.
What They Say
The foundation of the Bio-Extracts system is their range of lamellar emulsion creams, which are formulated to be non-greasy and rapidly absorbed. Their Multi-Lamellar System®was originally developed for extra-sensitive skin, and differs from the standard oil-in-water or water-in-oil formulation of most moisturisers.
Bio-Extracts products use a “phospholipids-based delivery system” to help Bio-Extracts’ actives penetrate deeper into the skin layers. Phospholipids are an essential part of the cellular membranes of all living organisms, and help to regulate cell life.
Their products are approved by the Vegan Society, paraben free and not tested on animals. Delivery is free for orders over £35 in the UK, and over £100 for International orders.
How does the Bio-Extracts system work?
So that’s all the science bit, but how does the system actually work?
Basically you select a base cream and boosters according to your skin type and the problems that you want to target. The cream and boosters are all supplied in specially designed air-free packaging, which measures out a specific amount of the product.
You then mix up to 4 shots of the booster with each measured amount of base cream, and apply as normal. The base cream’s pot has a curved surface, which you can use to mix up your products. Pretty clever idea, isn’t it?
You can either use one single booster, or mix and match them if your skin has more than one issue.
The products are made using highly purified ingredients, and the clever packaging keeps the air out to prevent them from degrading. The Bio Extracts range is vegan, not tested on animals, and is also free from parabens and GMO ingredients.
Choosing the right Products for you
With three different base creams and nine boosters, you might think that choosing is difficult. But the Bio-Extracts website has a dedicated section to help you make your selection. Simply click on your main skin concern, and it will show creams and boosters suitable for your needs. You then just need to decide whether your skin is normal, dry or oily, and pick which boosters to try.
Bio-Extracts Base Creams
There are three base creams in the Bio-Extracts range: Normal, Light (for oily skin) and Rich. After talking through my skincare concerns, I was sent the Bio-Extracts Rich cream to try. As you’d guess, this is a rich cream suitable for dry, dehydrated and mature skin. I guess all of those apply to my skin!
The cream comes in a pump action dispenser, which also has a bowl-shaped top to allow you to mix in the boosters. This has the benefit of protecting the cream from the air, as well as dispensing just the right amount of product each time.
On its own, the Bio-Extracts Rich Cream is quite thick and feels very rich when you apply it. It has a very gentle floral scent which I really like. Although it feels rich, it also sinks into my skin quite quickly, without leaving any kind of greasy residue.
Bio-Extracts Rich Cream costs £27 for 30ml.
There are currently nine boosters in the Bio-Extracts range, each of which addresses a specific skincare concern. You can either use each booster on its own, or combine them to truly personalise your Bio-Extracts skincare. I specified fine lines, sagging and dryness as the main issues with my skin. So Bio-Extracts sent me three different boosters to try:
- Anti-Oxidant Boost contains a combination of combination of fruit extract, minerals and flavonoids, designed to combat the ageing effects of free radicals. It’s ideal if you have dry skin, uneven skin tone and sun damaged skin.
- Hydro Boost is good for dry or dehydrated skin, as you’d expect. It forms a protective barrier and helps to reduce trans epidermal water loss, making the skin appear plumper and firmer.
- And Anti-Wrinkle Boost is designed to do what it says on the tin. It’s an intensive serum which contains Peruvian tree Tara and Green Algae to help boost the production of collagen in the skin.
The Boosters’ packaging is certainly eye-catching, and I love the air-less syringe pumps which deliver the correct amount of product. Each booster costs £19.50 for 10ml, and other boosters in the range include Glow, Pore Minimiser and Redness Relief.
Shipping is free for all UK orders, and for International orders over £35.
I really like the scientific look and feel of the Bio-Extracts packaging. It may not look as glossy as some other brands, but I think it really fits the high-tech feel of the range. I also like the fact that the products are dispensed from air-free pump dispensers. This helps to maintain the integrity of the active ingredients, which I think is pretty important.
However, I have to admit that I preferred to mix them in my palm rather than on the curved top of the cream dispenser. I felt that the products mixed together a little easier when I did it this way.
Also, I have to say that the packaging is quite bulky. I often fly with hand luggage only, and dispense toiletries into small pots to go through security. This wouldn’t really work well with the Bio Extracts packaging, and I think I’d have to have a fall back for these situations.
My Thoughts on Bio-Extracts
First of all, I absolutely love the Bio-Extract Rich cream. It can be used as a moisturiser on its own, and used like this it feels very rich and intensive. Even so, it is very quickly absorbed and left my skin feeling really soft. All of the products also smell beautiful, and it really made my skincare routine feel more like a pampering treat.
While the cream can be used both as a day cream and a night cream, it’s important to note that it doesn’t contain an SPF. So you will need to apply a separate SPF during the day.
Adding the Boosters
I experimented with adding different amounts of the various boosters. Adding more of the booster changes the consistency of the cream, so that it becomes more like a thick lotion. It’s still absorbed really quickly, and of course I didn’t need to apply a separate serum.
I decided that adding two shots of the booster made it the right consistency for me, although I’d have considered adding more if I felt my skin needed an extra helping hand.
The Hydro Boost really hydrated my skin, and made it feel very smooth and plumped up. I really noticed an improvement in the fine lines around my eyes and cheeks when I used this booster.
I didn’t feel that my skin showed a great difference when I was trialing the Anti-Wrinkle Boost. However this may have been because I didn’t use it for long enough to see the full benefit. However my skin still felt very soft and cared for while I was using this booster.
And I absolutely loved the Anti-Oxidant Boost. I definitely felt that my skin looked brighter and more radiant while I was testing this.
Bio-Extracts – The Verdict
I really like these products and was very impressed by the results I saw. My skin definitely improved while using the Bio-Extracts products, and I love their delicate scents.
The 30ml pot of Bio-Extracts Rich cream lasted me around a month, and while that might sound expensive, I was using these products in the morning and evening. I also didn’t need to use any serum apart from the Boosts that I was using.
My favourite combination was one pump of the Rich Cream mixed with one shot of Hydro Boost and one shot of Anti-Oxidant Boost. This gave me enough product to use on my face, neck and decolletage.
I love the fact that you can tailor this skincare to match your skin’s individual needs. For instance, you could add an extra shot of Hydro if your skin was looking particularly dry.
While I had a minor quibble about the bulky packaging, overall I highly recommend the Bio-Extracts range.
