The traditional Sunday Roast is one of my favourite parts of British food. I absolutely love a plate laden with roast meats, roast potatoes, veg, and lashings of hot gravy. Not forgetting the Yorkshire puddings as well, of course!
A while ago, I published a post about the best places for brunch in Birmingham, packed full of fantastic suggestions from some of my favourite Birmingham Bloggers.
So this time I’ve asked them for their recommendations for the best Sunday Lunch in Birmingham. And I think you’ll agree that these sound like great suggestions for a good old-fashioned Sunday roast. And best of all, there’s no washing up afterwards!
The Button Factory

The Button Factory is very high on my list of preferred eaterys. I love the fact that their kitchens are open which makes you feel as though the whole place is engaging with you. And the staff here are relaxed, courteous and extremely helpful.
So what can you expect from the Sunday Roast they so proudly serve up?
Well for one it makes you feel as though you have been encased in a delightful array of all things traditional. All vegetables are presented in such a way that you would think they had been farmed especially for you.
Yes they have a roast squash on the menu for us veggies, along with the option to add a recommended side of alcohol. They also provide an allergen menu for those of us who may have food allergies.
Oh and let’s not forget the mouth-watering puddings. I must admit that Sunday Lunch is the one time when I feel it’s my given right to enter into the realms of “I need a pudding fix”.
And because this gem is situated within the Jewellery Quarter, you could always pop along and purchase something special for someone dear to you!

Most people know 1000 Trades on Frederick Street in the Jewellery Quarter for its awesome pop-ups and fab range of craft beers and organic wines. But did you know they also do a pretty amazing Sunday Roast too?
Imagine a cosy lunch in front of a roaring log fire, or in the eclectically decorated, mismatched rear room overlooking the kitchen. And if that isn’t enough, there is the gentle sound of live jazz to have you grooving and finger-clicking over your roasties.
It’s a simple menu, there’s usually two meat and one veggie choice. But it is always beautifully presented, with luscious, flavoursome meat nestled on a stack of seasonal vegetables and seasoned roasties.
The parsnip crisps are incredibly more-ish, and the tempranillo-braised red cabbage is a taste sensation. I would seriously order plates of this alone.
And there is a light and fluffy Yorkshire pudding, and delicious gravy to top it all off.
My favourite JQ bar also happens to do my favourite JQ Sunday roast. It’s a wonder that I ever leave this place!
Purecraft Bar and Kitchen

With a food offering crafted by the man behind Michelin-starred Simpsons, it’s no surprise that the whole menu at Purecraft Bar and Kitchen is a winner.
But it’s the Sunday roasts that I love more than anything (and often find myself dreaming about).
Showcasing a different meat every week, you can expect anything from blushing pink beef with cauliflower cheese to crispy pork belly with their signature crackling.
As well as their own Purity Ales, they stock an ever changing selection of craft beers. And the helpful staff can recommend a beer pairing for every dish.
The Lord Clifden

If you’re in Birmingham city centre and you’re looking for the perfect Sunday lunch, look no further than The Lord Clifden.
This jewel of a pub is famous amongst city centre locals. It’s located on the edge of the Jewellery Quarter and from the outside looks a bit like ‘an old man pub’, but the quirky art inside says differently.
And then there’s the food – OH LORD the food! The Sunday lunch is legendary!
Now prepare yourself, this place is popular and they don’t take reservations. So you can be in for a bit of a wait to find a table. And you can also wait a good 45 minutes for the food too. Yet we all keep going back because trust me, it’s worth the wait!
My favourite is the Roast Chicken which is basically half a chicken on a mound of sides including mashed and roast potatoes, a huge Yorkshire pudding and lots of veg. So reasonably priced too at most roasts coming in just under £15!
The Lord Clifden is also famous for its entertainment and certainly worth checking out the next time you’re in Birmingham!
The Red Lion, Hockley

The Jewellery Quarter is the epicentre of the booming Independent food and drink scene in Birmingham. And any local will tell you that The Red Lion is the place to go for a proper Sunday roast.
Whatever your favoured choice of meat, you can be sure that it will be served perfectly here. Tender lamb, beef or even pork belly complete with exceptional crackling is accompanied by seasonal vegetables. The braised cabbage and kale are some of the highlights and a side of cauliflower cheese is a must. Whilst the huge home-made Yorkshire puddings dominate the plate there are plenty of crisp, fully roast potatoes hidden beneath them.
The Red Lion is all about comfort and satisfaction, and the drinks list is just as good as the menu. Go visit – it’s worth it.
The Garden House

The Garden House is not immediately visible if you’re on a mission to travel quickly in or out of Birmingham city centre. But if you’re looking for a sumptuous Sunday roast not too far from the centre of Birmingham, look no further.
This Chef & Brewers gem is tucked in next to the Cobden Hotel, and has a quirky decor inside. Despite the modern decoration, the building itself goes a long way towards portraying a cosy ambience.
Sunday lunch is available all day from 12pm and the menu is suitable for vegetarians as well as connoisseurs of a traditional Sunday dinner with turkey, lamb, beef or pork as the main attraction on the plate.
As a vegetarian myself I can vouch personally for the Roast Nut Wellington with a wide choice of vegetable and potatoes to go with it. My husband is the opposite, a more enthusiastic carnivore you couldn’t wish to meet. So the trio of roasts is a favourite of his.
And if you have room for pud, there’s a superb range of hot and cold options. They’re excellent, and light enough to follow a full Sunday lunch.
