Much as I love my boys, a few hours alone with very little to do is a wonderful thing. We’re coming to the end of 6 weeks of hustle and bustle during the summer holidays, the rush to buy new uniforms, shoes, lunchboxes… I find myself craving a little bit of time to myself to gather my thoughts.
So today Mark took the boys off to Birmingham, as Ollie had the final session of Apple Camp. So I have taken full advantage of the time alone, with a leisurely breakfast, a long shower, and then a little shopping for lunch.
My favourite lunch on these occasions is a simple plate of fresh bread and cheese. Today I bought a Saint Vernier from Waitrose to go with my bread. It’s wonderfully gooey, with a soft wine washed rind. I love Saint Vernier because although it’s creamy enough to spread on my crusty loaf, it has a slightly sharp flavour as well. I don’t want my cheese to be bland, I need it to pack a bit of a punch.
Soft juicy figs and crisp grapes completed my heavenly lunch and there is still time before the boys return, for a little reading and menu planning for the week ahead.
